Surviving an Earthquake

South West England might not be the first place you'd think to look for advice on surviving an earthquake – but scientists at the University of Bristol, with complementary studies from the neighbouring University of the West of England,  are at the cutting edge of research that explores and develops the basic principles used to protect structures during earthquakes.

Earthquake damage worldwide is estimated to cost in excess of US$ 70 Billion a year - and this is without factoring in the inevitable loss of human life.

The University of Bristol will soon open its new BLADE laboratory  (Bristol Laboratory for Advanced Dynamics Engineering) – one of the world's largest facilities for simulating earthquakes, allowing testing and evaluation to improve the structure and construction of buildings in areas at risk; avoiding human suffering and the massive economic loss associated with earthquake damage.
